Jon Rauch Designated for Assignment

The bad season for the Marlins bullpen has gotten worse.

After Saturday’s 9-2 loss to the Diamondbacks, the Marlins have designated reliever Jon Rauch for assignment. Left hander Duane Below had been called up from Triple-A New Orleans.

The bullpen has been bad all year, but Rauch in particular has had some rough outings. He’s 1-2 on the season, with the solo win coming off of the Marlins 15 inning duel with the Mets. His ERA is 7.86 for the year and Saturday night he gave up two runs and four hits. In 11.1 innings pitched in the month of April he gave up 10 runs, including 5 runs in a game against the Reds.

Jon Rauch isn’t the Marlins only problem in the bullpen.

The bullpen holds a 3.96 ERA and has failed to hold on to the few precious leads the Marlins multiple times. The one bright start however has been Ryan Webb, who holds a 1.64 ERA in 22 innings. The Marlins are hoping Duane Below will be part of the solution to their woe’s.  He holds a 3.38 ERA in 4 starts for New Orleans. If the Marlins want to start winning a change in the bullpen is a must, and the call-up of  Below is a step in the right direction.
